Rituparno Ghosh, National Award-winning filmmaker, dies

KOLKATA: Acclaimed Bengali filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh passed away in Kolkata on Thursday morning. He was suffering from pancreatitis and died of heart attack at 7.30 am. He was just 49 years old.

He also forayed into acting with two movies - "Memories in March" (a bilingual) and "Chitrangada". He was last working on a thriller "Swatyeneshi" (The Truth Seeker) - based on a novel by Saradhendu Bandopadhyay's detective character, Byomkesh Bakshi.

He also worked with Amitabh Bachchan in the movie The Last Lear.

Born and brought up in Kolkata, Ghosh last year won National Film Award for Best Director for his Bengali film 'Abohoman'.


Rituparno Ghosh is credited for helming many other critically acclaimed and National award-winning films like Dahan, Utsab, Chokher Bali, Raincoat, Dosor, The Last Lear, Shob Charitro and Kalponik.

He had won 12 national awards in the course of his career and has won international honours too.

One of the Top Film Director in Modern Bengali Film Industry who really after long time Made a Platform for Bengali Films in International Fim Festivals & Western World, His 'Chokher Bali' Made huge History and opened the door for Bengali Films.. again a Huge Market for International Market... I used to call him " Modern Satyajit Ray'

  13. Most talented film maker of today's bengal. had a great understanding of human behaviour, especially of women. very sensitive portrayal of human characters were central of of his films. We mourn because the world will miss so many creative works that he might produce. God should have given more time to him.
