She was a cute and friendly cat, a bit frail back then. I later found out her name was Shadow. </div><div><br /></div><div>Over time, she became an important part of my life. Each morning, I would find her waiting by the window, and before bedtime, I'd bid her good night. Despite people warning me about black cats bringing bad luck, I saw her as innocent, loving, and adorable baby. <span><a name='more'></a></span></div><div><br /></div><div>When I went for a walk, she'd join me. It might sound funny, but I shared my problems with her. A few times, I even cried while holding her, and she seemed to be a healer, trying to ease my pain. </div><div><br /></div><div>Recently, when she went missing, I cried like a baby in front of God. I called all my loved ones to pray for her, only to find out she had passed away in an accident. I was devastated. Throughout the night, I cried and screamed, wrestling with the reality of death, regretting not having the chance to say a final goodbye or to bury her myself. </div><div><br /></div><div>Even though death is a part of life, it hit me hard. I miss her terribly and am trying to come to terms with the loss. </div><div><br /></div><div>I treated her like my baby. Shadow's black coat made me see the goddess Kali in her, prompting me to light lamps in front of her in a gesture of reverence.</div><div><br /></div><div>I believe she's in a better place now, wishing for my happiness rather than sadness. Thus, I try to focus on the fond memories we shared.</div><div><br /></div><div>Though the pain of loss weighs heavy, I choose to celebrate the joy she brought into my life. I will consciously try to eat on time and find moments of joy. I hold the belief that the soul endures, and I hope to reunite with her in a new life. </div><div><br /></div><div><div>Wherever she is, I wish for her enduring happiness and pray for her safety and a life filled with love. If she has been reincarnated, I ask for blessings to shower upon her new family and loved ones, keeping them happy and safe.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Naajo se tujhe paala maine, kaliyo ki tarah phulo ki tarah.</i></div><div><i>Bachapan me julaaya hain tujhko, banho ne meri julo ki tarah.</i></div><div><i>Mere baag ki ai naajuk daali, tujhe harpal nayi bahaar mile. </i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>Beete tere jivan ki ghadiya, aaram ki thhandi chhanv mein.</i></div><div><i>Kaanta bhi naa chubhane paaye kabhi, meri ladali tere paanv mein.</i></div><div><i>Uss dwar se bhi dukh dur rahe, jis dwar se teraa dwar mile.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>(I have nurtured you with tenderness, like the petals of a flower.</i></div><div><i>In your childhood, I cradled you in my arms, just like the swings.</i></div><div><i>Like a delicate branch in my garden, may you find new blossoms every moment.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>May the moments of your life pass in the cool shade of peace.</i></div><div><i>May not even a thorn touch you, my beloved, in your path.</i></div><div><i>May sorrow stay away from the door from which your journey begins.)</i></div><div><br /></div><div>Until we meet again, may Shadow's spirit stay happy in the memories we created together, reminding us of the special bond we shared.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>I love you 3000!</div><div><br /></div><div>Your's,</div><div>-K Himaanshu Shuklaa..</div>K Himaanshu Shuklaahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963596965399471228noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1701252436609310903.post-65863617119693003492023-12-28T22:23:00.003+05:302023-12-28T22:34:19.272+05:30In Memoriam: Reflecting on the Gentle Spirit of Yadav Uncle<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHTB6OHWRoasDgoWkMVId_hTyqHtxtchy-kDEvzuL5BKOItjatIxLpdrgUZLH2h4gYousienYakUi8jzK1XfnUJlHj84HpWorfXqiigZvKmryeN4OtJRRYaOjf1XxHLkLjNztg5RWLVNufmv8LnRrLCHJF_nH3UJVNkOJw8uIeCxxQclcVxpZ1PiApWe8o/s716/Ashok%20Yadav(k%20himaanshu%20shuklaa).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="708" data-original-width="716" height="632" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHTB6OHWRoasDgoWkMVId_hTyqHtxtchy-kDEvzuL5BKOItjatIxLpdrgUZLH2h4gYousienYakUi8jzK1XfnUJlHj84HpWorfXqiigZvKmryeN4OtJRRYaOjf1XxHLkLjNztg5RWLVNufmv8LnRrLCHJF_nH3UJVNkOJw8uIeCxxQclcVxpZ1PiApWe8o/w640-h632/Ashok%20Yadav(k%20himaanshu%20shuklaa).jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Earlier today, the security guard shared with me that he couldn't identify the person who had passed away, but he noticed a considerable gathering of people arriving to offer their last respects. Later, upon checking WhatsApp, I discovered the news of Yadav Uncle's demise. The revelation brought a sense of sorrow, as I recalled a couple of fond memories with him. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><span><a name='more'></a></span></div><div><br /></div><div>In contemporary times, the fast-paced nature of our lives has resulted in a diminished presence at funerals, with people being too occupied to participate in funeral processions. In cities like Mumbai, it's not uncommon for neighbours to pass away without others being aware, highlighting the disconnect that can exist in our busy urban lives.</div><div><br /></div><div>Yadav's uncle's kindness, sweetness, and willingness to help others explained the large crowd that had gathered to bid him a final farewell.</div><div><br /></div><div>Currently, I reside in the 'Lok Yamuna', but a couple of years ago, I was staying in the E-wing of 'Lok Sarita'. I was working from home at that time. One afternoon, when I returned after a quick outing, the security guard prevented me from entering the premises of the building. The reason behind this was that our rental agreement had expired a few months prior, and our landlord, who was in Delhi at the time, had been making excuses to delay its renewal. He assured us that once he returned, he would assist in renewing the agreement and emphasized that it wouldn't pose any problems.</div><div><br /></div><div>My flatmates were out of town, and I was requesting the security guard to allow me to go inside the flat at least this one time so that I could bring my mobile phone. His response was surprisingly rude. Thankfully, Yadav uncle, who understood my situation, stepped in later and instructed the guard to let me go upstairs to fetch my mobile phone.</div><div><br /></div><div>I contacted my landlord, who advised me to discuss the issue with the head of the society. However, surprisingly, the society head responded harshly, asking me to shut up and abruptly ending the call despite my pleas. </div><div><br /></div><div>Once again, Yadav uncle came to my aid, offering me water and assuring me that he would assist in resolving the matter. Fortunately, after a frustrating wait of 6 hours, I was finally granted access to my flat. </div><div><br /></div><div>The following day, I expressed my gratitude to Yadav uncle, and he smiled, advising me to promptly renew the rent agreement. He further assured me that I could reach out to him for assistance anytime I needed.</div><div><br /></div><div>I met him a couple of times, and without fail, he greeted me with a warm smile. His consistent kindness and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on me.</div><div><br /></div><div>I extend my heartfelt prayers to the compassionate God, seeking eternal peace for him.</div><div><br /></div><div>Om Shanti,</div><div>-K Himaanshu Shuklaa..</div>K Himaanshu Shuklaahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963596965399471228noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1701252436609310903.post-78320918337480353302023-12-28T14:16:00.004+05:302023-12-28T14:19:55.500+05:30#WebSockets: Part 3 Key components of the Java WebSocket API<div style="text-align: right;">

It provides a set of classes and interfaces that allow us to create WebSocket-based applications in Java. The WebSocket API was introduced in Java EE 7 and is designed to simplify the development of real-time, bidirectional communication between clients and servers.</div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><br /></div><div><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">Explain the key components of the Java WebSocket API.</b></div><div>The key components include Endpoint, Session, and MessageHandler. Here are some key classes and interfaces in the javax.websocket package:</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>javax.websocket.Endpoint</b>: Endpoint represents the entry point for WebSocket communication. This is an abstract class that we extend to create your WebSocket endpoint. We override its methods to handle lifecycle events and incoming WebSocket messages.</li><li><b>javax.websocket.Session</b>: Represents an active connection between the client and the server. We can use this object to send messages to the client and to manage the WebSocket session.</li><li><b>javax.websocket.MessageHandler</b>: This is an interface we can implement to handle incoming WebSocket messages. There are three subinterfaces for handling different types of messages:</li><ul><li>a). MessageHandler.Whole: Handles complete messages.</li><li>b). MessageHandler.Partial: Handles partial messages.</li><li>c). We can use this to configure aspects of the endpoint, such as encoders, decoders, and extensions.</li></ul><div><div><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">How can we configure Websocket endpoints, and how do you handle WebSocket events in Java?</b></div><div>There are two ways of configuring endpoints:</div><div>a). annotation-based: We can use dedicated method-level annotations.</div><div>b). extension-based: In this, we need to extend the javax.websocket.Endpoint class.</div><div><br /></div><div>As the annotation model is a bit cleaner, that's why I preferred to use it. We can handle WebSocket endpoint lifecycle events with the following annotations:</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>@ServerEndpoint</b>: If a class is annotated with @ServerEndpoint, the container ensures the availability of the class as a WebSocket server listening to a specific URI space.</li><li><b>@ClientEndpoint</b>: A class will be treated as a WebSocket client if it is annotated with @ClientEndpoint.</li><li><b>@OnOpen</b>: If a Java method is annotated with @OnOpen, it will be triggered by the container when a new WebSocket connection is established.</li><li><b>@OnMessage</b>: A Java method annotated with @OnMessage will be triggered by the container when a message is received from the client.</li><li><b>@OnError</b>: A method with @OnError is invoked when there’s a problem with the communication.</li><li><b>@OnClose</b>: A method annotated with @OnClose will be triggered when the WebSocket connection is closed.</li></ul></div></div></div><div><div><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">What is the difference between text and binary messages in WebSockets?</b></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>WebSockets support two types of messages: text messages, which are encoded as UTF-8, and binary messages, which can contain any binary data. The choice between text and binary depends on the nature of the data being sent.</li><li>Text messages are encoded as UTF-8 and are meant for transmitting human-readable text. They are suitable for sending messages that consist of characters, strings, or JSON data. Whereas the Binary messages can be used to send arbitrary binary data. This can include images, files, or any other data that is not represented as text. Binary messages are not interpreted as UTF-8, allowing for the direct transmission of raw binary data.</li><li>Text messages may have a slightly larger overhead due to UTF-8 encoding, especially when dealing with non-ASCII characters. However, Binary messages are more efficient for transmitting raw binary data since there is no additional encoding overhead. </li></ul><div><div><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">Can you explain the role of Decoders and Encoders in the Java WebSocket API?</b></div><div>In the Java WebSocket API, encoders and decoders are components that help convert between WebSocket messages and Java objects. In part 2 we will discuss WebSockets.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">What is WebSocket?</b></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>WebSocket is a thin, lightweight layer above TCP, which is used to create a communication channel between a client and a server.</li><li>It provides efficient communication between the server and the web browser by providing bi-directional, full-duplex, real-time client and server communications. The server and client can send data to each other at any time.</li><li>Since the WebSocket runs over TCP, it also provides a low-latency, low-level communication, and reduces the overhead of each message.</li><li>WebSockets are typically designed to be implemented in web browsers and web servers, however, they can be used in any application where real-time communication is needed.<span><a name='more'></a></span></li></ul></div><div><br /></div><div><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">What are the drawbacks of Web Sockets?</b></div><div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Limited Browser Support</b>: While modern browsers widely support Web Sockets, there may be scenarios where you have to deal with legacy systems or environments where WebSocket support is limited or disabled. In such cases, you might need to provide fallback mechanisms or consider alternative communication technologies. In my case, a few of the clients were using Internet Explorer 10 and earlier versions, which do not support WebSockets. While most of them were using Internet Explorer 11, which is a later version, added support for WebSockets. That's why based on the WebSocket support, in the backend we added a fallback code.</li><li><b>Firewall and Proxy Issues</b>: Some network configurations, firewalls, and proxy servers may not support WebSocket connections, leading to communication issues. Our client environment had some restrictions, to resolve this administrators explicitly enabled WebSocket traffic.</li><li><b>Scalability</b>: Web Sockets maintain a persistent connection between the client and the server, which can have implications for server and network resources. Servers need to manage open connections, and network infrastructure needs to handle long-lived connections effectively. Proper load balancing and resource management techniques must be implemented to ensure scalability. This may require additional server-side resources and configurations.</li><li><b>No Built-in Broadcasting</b>: The Web Sockets allow point-to-point communication, which means they do not inherently support broadcasting messages to multiple clients. Implementing a broadcasting mechanism typically involves maintaining a list of connected clients on the server and iterating through them to send messages individually. I faced this issue while replacing Java Sockets with WebSockets because in my case the server periodically broadcasts some message to all the connected clients.</li><li><b>No Built-in Message Acknowledgments</b>: Web Sockets do not inherently provide built-in acknowledgement mechanisms. The message delivery acknowledgement is crucial for our application, which is why we implemented a custom solution on top of Web Sockets.</li><li><b>Resource Exhaustion</b>: If you keep a large number of open WebSocket connections it can potentially exhaust system resources, such as file descriptors or memory, on the server. To prevent resource-related issues proper connection management and resource monitoring are important.</li><li><b>Security Considerations</b>: Web Sockets introduce new security considerations, especially when dealing with cross-origin communication. Proper security measures, such as enforcing secure connections (WSS) and implementing authentication and authorization mechanisms, are crucial.</li></ul></div></div><div><div><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;"><br /></b></div><div><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">How do WebSockets differ from traditional HTTP communication?</b></div><div><ul><li>The traditional HTTP follows a request-response model, the client makes a request, and after the server sends its response, the connection is closed. In future, if the client needs more data, they have to open a new connection. FYI, we can reuse the TCP/IP connection with HTTP/1.1.</li><li>In the case of WebSocket, the client can open and use a single connection for all their WebSocket communications with the server. Both the client and server can send and receive data simultaneously/independently over a long-lived connection. This long-lived persistent connection allows for low-latency, bidirectional messages. The server can push real-time updates as soon as they become available without waiting for the client to issue a request.</li><li>In the case of HTTP, the connection is stateless. This means that every HTTP request the server receives is independent and does not relate to requests that came before it. Because of the persistent connection, the WebSocket is stateful.</li></ul><div><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;"><br /></b></div><div><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">How are WebSocket connections established? Explain the WebSocket handshake process.</b></div><div><div><br /></div><div>The WebSocket handshake involves an HTTP upgrade request from the client and an acceptance response from the server. Once the handshake is complete, the communication switches to the WebSocket protocol.</div><div><br /></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>HTTP Upgrade Request</b>: The client initiates the handshake by sending an HTTP upgrade request to the server. This is an indication of the client's intention to switch to the WebSocket protocol.</li><li><b>Server Response</b>: When the server receives the upgrade request, it responds with an HTTP 101 status code, indicating a successful upgrade to the WebSocket protocol.</li><li><b>Headers and Key Generation</b>: During the handshake, both the client and server exchange headers containing the information required for establishing the WebSocket connection. The client generates a random key, which is combined with a predefined Websocket GUID and then base64-encoded.</li><li><b>Verification and Acceptance</b>: The received key is verified by the server. The server then constructs a response key by concatenating the client key with the GUID and then base64-encoded it. If the server accepts the client’s request, it includes the response key in the response headers.</li><li><b>Connection Establishment</b>: After the client receives the server’s response, it verifies the response key to ensure the connection is established with the correct server. If the verification is successful, the WebSocket connection is considered open and ready for bidirectional communication.</li></ul><div>The key headers involved include Upgrade, Connection, Sec-WebSocket-Key, and Sec-WebSocket-Accept.</div></div></div><div><script src="https://gist.github.com/greekykhs/3a98359c928afbce77cb7b9631c3c95d.js"></script></div><div><br /></div></div></div><div><div><div style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">Explain the purpose of the Sec-WebSocket-Protocol header in the WebSocket handshake.</span></div><div style="font-style: italic;">The Sec-WebSocket-Protocol header is part of the WebSocket protocol's handshake process and is used to negotiate and establish a subprotocol between the client and the server.</div><div style="font-style: italic;"><br /></div><div style="font-style: italic;">During the handshake, the client would ask the server what kind of subprotocols are supported by sending Sec-WebSocket-Protocol header. The client can specify one or more WebSocket protocols that you wish to use, in order of preference. The first one that is supported by the server will be selected and returned by the server in a Sec-WebSocket-Protocol header included in the response. </div><div style="font-style: italic;"><br /></div><div style="font-style: italic;">We can use this more than once in the header, as well; the result is the same as if you used a comma-delineated list of subprotocol identifiers in a single header.</div><div style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"><br /></div></div><div><b><i>If you enjoy our content and want to support us, please consider donating via gpay, phonepay or paytm on +91 9920600280. In this series of tutorials, I will explain some basic details of Java Sockets and Websockets. I will also provide a working code in which 2 servers communicate via WebSockets.</div><div><br /></div><div>During the migration from Java Sockets to WebSockets I faced a couple of issues, I will also explain how I resolved those issues.<span><a name='more'></a></span></div><div><div>Let us start with some basics of Java Sockets and Socket Programming in Java.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: #cfe2f3;"><b>What is a socket in Java?</b></span></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>In Java, a socket is a programming mechanism that enables communication between two computers over a network.</li><li>We can say a socket is one endpoint of a two-way communication link between two programs running on the network.</li><li>A socket connection means the two machines have information about each other’s network location (IP Address) and TCP port, which allows us to send and receive data.</li></ul></div><div>There are two types of sockets in Java, both are present in the java.net package:</div><div><br /></div><div>1). <b><u>ServerSocket</u></b>: This class implements a server socket, which waits for incoming client connections. Once a connection is established, it returns a new Socket object that represents the connection to the client. </div><div><br /></div><div>There are two important methods of the java.net.ServerSocket class:</div><div>a). public Socket accept(): This method returns the socket and establishes a connection between server and client.</div><div>b). public synchronized void close(): It closes the server socket.</div><div><br /></div><div>2). <b><u>Socket</u></b>: This class represents a client-side socket, which can connect to a server socket. It can also be used for communication with the server once the connection is established. </div><div><br /></div><div>By using the java.net.Socket class instead of relying on native code, your Java programs can communicate over the network in a platform-independent fashion.</div><div><br /></div><div>Important methods of java.net.Socket class:</div><div>a). public InputStream getInputStream(): returns the InputStream attached with this socket.</div><div>b). public OutputStream getOutputStream(): returns the OutputStream attached with this socket.</div><div>c). public synchronized void close(): closes this socket</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Here is the sample program of a basic server and client using sockets in Java:</div><div><br /></div><div><script src="https://gist.github.com/greekykhs/9b245488687eca18b12ed89d81dfe807.js"></script></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><script src="https://gist.github.com/greekykhs/e99e9d715321a1f524eab34660aee4ac.js"></script></div><div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: left;"><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">What is the difference between a server socket and a client socket?</b></div><div>A Server Socket listens for incoming connection requests from clients. Once a connection is accepted, the server socket creates a new socket dedicated to that particular client for further communication. Whereas A Client Socket initiates a connection to a server socket. Once the connection is established, the client socket can send and receive data to and from the server.</div><div><br /></div><div>We can say that server sockets are used by server programs to listen for incoming connections, while client sockets are used by client programs to initiate connections to servers. The two types of sockets work together to enable communication between processes over a network.</div><div><br /></div><div>In essence, while both are endpoints in a two-way communication link, the server socket accepts connections, and the client socket initiates them.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">How would you handle socket exceptions in your code?</b></div><div>Exception handling is crucial in socket programming. Common exceptions include IOException and SocketException. We can use try-catch blocks to handle these exceptions and implement appropriate error-handling logic. In the catch block, we can just log the error message, terminate the program or if possible attempt recovery after some delay. We need to ensure resources are freed even when exceptions occur, for this, we can close sockets in a finally block. This prevents resource leaks which could lead to system instability.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">Explain bind(), and accept() functions in socket programming.</b></div><div>In socket programming, particularly in the context of TCP/IP communication, the bind(), listen(), and accept() functions are commonly used to set up and manage server sockets.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>a). accept()</b>: This function accepts an incoming connection from the queue, creating a new socket specifically for that connection. This is similar to taking a letter out of your mailbox. If no pending requests are in the queue, accept() blocks until a connection request arrives.</div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>b). bind()</b>: It associates a socket with a specific network address (IP address and port number) on the local machine so it can receive data from that specific endpoint. If the specified address is null, the system will automatically pick up an ephemeral port and a valid local address to bind this socket.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><div><i>ServerSocket serverSocket = new ServerSocket();</i></div><div><i>serverSocket.bind(new java.net.InetSocketAddress("localhost", portNumber));</i></div></div><div><br /></div><div><div>There are 2 overloaded versions of bind methods are available:</div><div>1). public void bind(SocketAddress endpoint) throws IOException </div><div>2). public void bind(SocketAddress endpoint, int backlog) throws IOException </div><div><br /></div><div>Where the endpoint represents the IP address and port number to bind to. The backlog is the requested maximum number of pending connections on the socket. The value of the backlog should always be greater than 0, if it's zero or negative, then an implementation-specific default value will be used.</div><div><br /></div><div>The bind() can throw an IOException if the bind operation fails, or if the socket is already bound. If the SecurityManager is present and its checkListenmethod doesn't permit the operation then SecurityException will be thrown. It will throw an IllegalArgumentException if the endpoint is a SocketAddress subclass not supported by this socket.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: left;"><b style="background-color: #cfe2f3;">Explain the concept of blocking and non-blocking sockets.</b></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>In simple words, blocking sockets wait for an operation to complete before allowing the program to proceed, while non-blocking sockets allow the program to continue executing even if an operation is not completed.</li><li>If a process tries to read from a blocking socket and there is no data available, it will wait until data is received.
