What are we supposed to do on Mahalaya Amavasya?

Being a Hindu, I firmly believe in rebirth. After we die, we reincarnate in a new form.

Not everyone who dies will go to heaven. Some souls suffer because of bad karma. They may choose to reincarnate in order to exact retribution or to fulfil their unfulfilled dreams and ambitions. Otherwise, they could be in hell and suffering.

Therefore, on this auspicious day of Mahalaya Amavasya, we pray to spiritually assist them in raising their energy to eradicate their bad karma. If they are born again, we pray that they will have a happy life.

Because of them, we exist, that's why we pray to express heartfelt gratitude.

Also, there's a chance that our descendants from past births are praying for us somewhere. On Mahalaya Amavasya, it would be good if, in addition to praying for the ancestors of our current body, we could also send blessings from our previous birth's descendants.
