Recalling January 19, 1990

On January 19, 1990, a tragic chapter unfolded as over 400,000 Kashmiri Pandits were confronted with a harrowing ultimatum - 'Ralive-Tsalive-Ya Galive' (convert to Islam, leave the region, or face dire consequences). 

The air was tainted with shock as loudspeakers blared unsettling demands: "Aasie gacchie panunuy Pakistan. Batav rostuy batenien saan (We want our Pakistan. Without Kashmiri Pandit men but with Kashmiri Pandit women)." 

This misuse of mosque loudspeakers, intended for the serene call to prayer (Azan), added to the distress. It symbolized a gross deviation from the sanctity these platforms hold. The forced exodus of Kashmiri Pandits remains a painful reminder of the challenges faced by minority communities during troubled times, highlighting the urgent need for communal harmony and respect for religious sanctuaries.

We, as Indians, will always remember this day. I really hope that Kashmiri Pandits, who went through this difficult time, can go back to their homes one day. Let's wish for a future where they can live in peace and dignity.
