Nag Panchami: Why Snakes are worshipped in India?

Nag Panchami is observed on Shukla Paksha Panchami (the Fifth Day of the Shukal Paksh) during Shravan month. On this day, Snakes are worshipped across India.

Snakes play an integral role in maintaining balance in the ecosystem, saving our crops by keeping rodent populations down. As per the ancient Hindu custom, snakes should not be killed, they are rather respected and humbly asked to leave if they enter someone’s house or come in the way. After all Hinduism is all about providing an ideal environment for peaceful coexistence.
