Sushmita Sen brings rare honour to Bollywood
Popular actress and Miss Universe Sushmita Sen is the only Bollywood actor to be featured in a coffee table book titled ‘The Indian Woman’ curated for the President of India’s gift for visiting international diplomats.
Sushmita features alongside Kiran Majumdar Shaw, Naina Lal Kidwai, Mary Kom, Gita Gopinath, Ela Bhatt, Bhanu Athaiya, Alisah Abdullah and Lata Mangeshkar, among other 20 women who are pioneers in their fields.
Her story is written by Priyanka Jain, who has co-authored a book on Vinod Chopra Productions and is also working on another on Paan Singh Tomar for UTV Disney. ‘The Indian Woman’ is curated by Shobit Arya, edited by the CNN-IBN anchor Richa Anirudh and published by Wisdom Tree.
The story celebrates Sushmita’s journey from a young Miss Universe to a single mother with two kids and a successful career. Talking about celebrating inner beauty, she suggests, “If you go beyond limiting beauty by the length of your hair, size of your butt or parameters of your figure, you will find a beauty that’s ethereal.”
“Nature doesn’t say wrinkles are ugly. Should I give up smiling – a thing that fills me with joy – just because I might get a few lines,” asks the diva, who completes two decades since she was crowned Miss Universe in her teens in 1994.
The book, which is a collector’s edition, “Reflects India’s pride and succeeds in passing on the enduring legacy of our highly creative and dedicated womenfolk to future generations,” remarks Bollywood public relations impresario Dale Bhagwagar.
Narrating her experiences in the book, Sushmita urges women to find beauty through their confidence and surround themselves with real people, who are supportive of who they are, and are not around because of how they look.

Rakul Preet's discipline stems from her army connection!
Actress Rakul Preet who is set to make her foray into Bollywood with Yaariyaan; the directorial debut of T-Series’ head honcho Bhushan Kumar’s wife Divya Kumar, has a habit of reaching her sets half an hour before time!
When asked about it, she credits her tendency to her army connection. Rakul’s dad is a colonel in the army and she has done her final years of schooling from Army Public School in Delhi. A mathematics graduate, she has studied financial management.
“They say discipline is the soul of an army. I have grown up inculcating the values of timeliness, obedience, restraint and commitment. I’m realizing that qualities like these go a long way in shaping life,” she says with dreams in her eyes.
Rakul’s family background puts the gal in a unique league of Bollywood beauties like Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, Sushmita Sen, Anushka Sharma, Chitrangada Singh and Lara Dutta; all of whom hail from military backgrounds; with parents posted in various rungs of the military hierarchy.

Rakul Preet to debut in Bollywood with Yaariyaan
.jpg)
The glamorous industry of Bollywood owes a lot to the Miss
India pageant; a talent house which has produced some of the biggest film stars.
The names include Nutan, Zeenat Aman, Juhi Chawla, Meenakshi Seshadri, Sushmita
Sen, Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra.
And now another Miss India participant Rakul Preet is all
set to enter the glittering world with Yaariyaan; the directorial debut of
T-Series’ head honcho Bhushan Kumar’s wife Divya Kumar.
“Yaariyaan is about five college friends and I play a nerd
in the film. One who is very good with numbers,” quips the leading lady. The
character is quite of her liking, as the tall and lissome Rakul is a
mathematics graduate, who has studied financial management.
Moreover, like many previous beauty pageant winners, she
comes from a family background of the Indian Army. Rakul won various titles in
the Miss India pageant of 2011. She bagged Miss India People’s Choice, Miss
Beautiful Eyes, Miss Beautiful Smile, Miss Fresh Face, Miss Talented and
emerged the third runner-up finalist.
Soon after, she participated in Miss Tourism in China and
rose to the sixth position in the international pageant. But that’s not all to her
Libran multi-faceted personality! Apart from Hindi, English and Punjabi, the
gal has now learnt to speak Tamil and Telugu and also acted in Southern hits.
Her die-hard interests include horse riding, Bharatanatyam,
and hold your breath; golf too. Now, now! How many Bollywood actresses would have
engaged in playing golf! But if you think, that’s enough for Rakul, you are
mistaken!
The girl is a fitness freak with gymming and swimming being
her daily addictions. She’s a Blue Belt in Karate, plays cricket, basket ball
and even lawn tennis! And wait, did we tell you, she’s particularly proud of
her 36-24-36 figure! Ooh la la!
