Aamir Khan dropped from Haryana Mahapanchayat!

Latest reports suggest that village leaders of the Khap Panchayats in Haryana, have dropped the idea of inviting superstar Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao for the Mahapanchayat being held at Bibipur village on July 14, to discuss the raging issue of female feticide.

Apparently, the decision was taken as some local panchayat leaders objected to the portrayal of the issue of honour killings and their connection to Khap Panchayats in an episode of Aamir’s show Satyamev Jayate on Star Plus.

Reacting to the development, Bollywood PR guru Dale Bhagwagar said, “It’s unfortunate that Aamir Khan will not be there. His star presence and persona could have made a real difference in the discussion over widening of sex ratio in Haryana.”

“It could have put the Mahapanchayat meeting on a national platform, garnering huge media attention; which a noble cause like this deserves,” the publicist added.

Parliamentary panel invites Aamir for inputs on medical issues

A parliamentary panel has invited actor Aamir Khan, who exposed malpractices in the medical sector on his "Satyamev Jayate" TV program-me, for an interaction on the issue. He will appear Thursday morning with his team.

Rajya Sabha MP Shanta Kumar of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who heads the parliamentary standing committee on commerce, has invited the actor to share the knowledge they gained while researching the episode.

Aamir's spokesperson confirmed to IANS that he will be there Thursday morning to interact with the panel.

Aamir, 47, lifted the veil from the malpractices in the medical profession through his maiden TV show "Satyamev Jayate" and discussed issues like doctors taking cuts and other unethical medical practices. He presented live examples of people who could have been cured with simple medicines but were advised by doctors to undergo surgeries, robbing them of precious money.

Broadcast May 27, the well-researched episode also addressed issues like overpricing of life-saving drugs.
The expose brought brick backs and criticism from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which wanted Aamir to apologize. But he said his conviction in the concept and aim of the show have left him fearless of negative reactions.

"Satyamev Jayate", which marks the Bollywood's thinking actor's entry into the field of television, has so far discussed issues like female foeticide, child sex abuse and domestic violence.

In fact, parliament has only now passed a bill on stringent action against those guilt of child sex abuse.
The actor has struck the right chord with the audiences as people are watching the show with great interest. Aamir says this is his way of contributing to society by creating awareness.

I'm not interested in politics: Aamir Khan

He doesn't want to enter politics and candidly admits he has no solutions to problems. Actor-filmmaker Aamir Khan, revelling in the "dream reaction" to his TV show "Satyamev Jayate", says his purpose is served if his efforts make people introspect.

Each Sunday since May 6 had seen the 47-year-old bring Indian television audiences face-to-face with issues like female foeticide, dowry, child abuse, malpractices in medical profession and honour killing. An entertainer rarely does that, and Aamir is happy in his space.

"I am not interested in politics, so I won't be joining politics. I feel what I am able to do from where I am, from the the stream that I am in, is much more. I can contribute much more (this way). So I am happy doing that," Aamir told IANS in an exclusive interview.
He admits one TV show and one person's efforts cannot bring about any change, but says "information and knowledge make you act differently". And that, through "Satyamev Jayate", is his effort.
Excerpts from the interview to IANS:

Q: Your show has received stupendous response from all quarters. Has the audience given it more love than you expected?
A: This is a very dream reaction that we are getting...right from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, people are watching it in the small towns, villages, big cities... People across all economic groups and across rural and urban areas are watching it. The way people are emotionally connected to it is great. The way it is moving them, touching them, and affecting them is very heartening.

Q: You seem to have donned the role of a social reformer. Post "Satyamev Jayate", do we see you take on a larger role at some point, perhaps join politics?
A: I am not interested in politics, so I won't be joining politics. I feel what I am able to do from where I am, from the the stream that I am in, is much more. I can contribute much more (this way). So I am happy doing that.

Q: Is there any follow-up mechanism to the social issues that you have been raising on the show?
A: We believe information and knowledge make you act differently. Giving a broad example, if you look at a film like "Taare Zameen Par"... When the film was released, majority of the country's population had no idea that there was something like dyslexia, a learning disability. Thereafter, it started having an impact that has continued till today. So what we can do with this show is - 13 "Taare Zameen Par".

We are trying to get the viewers to look inwards. We are not expecting you to join an andolan (revolution) on female foeticide, nor are we expecting you to barge in each house of your neighbourhood to check if they are doing it or not... what we are expecting is that you yourself should not do it, and if somebody is thinking of doing it, you should discourage them from doing it.

We are trying to show the way forward. And by that I don't mean that we have a solution. So in answer to what the follow up is to this - I don't know what it is. What we are doing is basic, essential, fundamental and primary. And according to me, the follow-up or rather fallout of this will be very organic in itself.

Q: Several individuals and NGOs work towards society's betterment. But that hasn't helped so far. What do you have to say?
A: We are not discovering a new issue, we are actually tackling issues that are well known. Our research is based on work done by experts and social activists over the last 20 to 30 years. So their work is remarkable and important. Now what do I bring to the table?

Their work is the foundation of our work, and I am using my goodwill, which I have earned over the last two-and-a-half-decades. I am trying to put it to good use and using television, a fantastically strong medium, to address issues on a mass scale.

Q: You have let go of the aura around a celebrity to come closer to the country's masses and their problems. How gratifying is the experience?
A: It's been an amazing journey to come in contact with people from different parts of the country and from different cultures. I have had the good fortune of learning so much more about the country. It has got me closer to the people of our country. It is a huge learning experience for me to do this show.

Patients' body backs Aamir for exposing 'rot' in healthcare

4A patients' body called People for Better Treatment has rallied behind Bollywood star Aamir Khan for focusing on the "rot" in the Indian healthcare delivery system during his popular television programme.

The actor, who hosts the Sunday television show 'Satyamev Jayate', has been the target of protests by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and a section of the medical community for generalising about medical negligence and corruption in healthcare in the show.

The IMA bigshots claimed that the television show has given a one-sided picture of "medical negligence and corruption" in healthcare. While some medicos have demanded an apology from the celebrated actor, some doctors have threatened a defamation lawsuit against Khan for "slandering" the medical community.
"The reason for such an overtly exaggerated response from our healers to an ordinary television program is bewildering indeed," president of People for Better Treatment, Kunal Saha, said in a statement.

"The shabby condition of Indian healthcare is a common knowledge for the ordinary citizens. Reports of horrific deaths and injuries from alleged "medical negligence" in hospitals and nursing homes appear almost on a daily basis in the news," Saha said in the statement.

"There is no denying that the healthcare system in India has been riddled with negligence and corruption. Doctors involved with other Machiavellian activities that are clearly against accepted medical ethics can be found in almost every medical office and hospital," the statement said.
He alleged that acceptance of "commission" from medical laboratories for referring patients and taking "expensive gifts from drug manufacturers" for writing prescription of a specific drug has become an "acceptable and shameless practice" by many of our healers despite the presence of stringent laws against such unethical behaviours.

"Deep-rooted corruption has plagued even Medical Council of India (MCI) - the highest regulatory body for control of healthcare education and medical practice in India," Saha said.
"In fact, at the present moment, MCI is being run through a stop-gap measure with an Adhoc committee," he said.

"Little wonder that issues pertaining to "medical negligence" have come to the limelight in the recent years in India. Mr. Khan hosted the television show focusing on corruption and negligence in healthcare seemingly to underscore this popular theme which is of great significance in Indian society today," the statement added.

While on the one hand, the programme exposed the rampant corruption in the medical system, it also underscored the noble work done by many compassionate and honest doctors, said Saha.
